11 free banking alerts you can set up today

Did you know that you can get alerts about what’s going on with your credit card and bank accounts?

Alerts are an easy way to keep track of your money and help protect your accounts. You can use them to receive automatic, real-time notifications by text or email when certain events happen or when changes are made to your online banking account.

Real-time alerts can help you manage your money, as they bring immediate awareness to your spending. They can also help you identify potentially fraudulent transactions, giving you peace of mind.

Most financial institutions offer this type of service. They are simple to set up, plus you can customize your alerts to get just the information you want.

Below is a rundown of the alerts you can set up at Vancity. If you ever receive an alert for an activity that you didn’t do or that seems suspicious, contact us right away to secure your account.

Vancity enviro visa cards

Credit card

You can set up the following five transactional alerts on any of your personal Vancity enviro Visa credit cards.

1. Outside Canada

This alert will let you know when someone uses your credit card for a foreign transaction, including ATM cash withdrawals.

Consider using this alert to manage your spending while travelling abroad or to watch for potentially fraudulent foreign transactions when you’re at home.

2. Purchase amount

This alert will let you know when someone makes a purchase over a set amount on your credit card (you determine the amount).

Consider using this alert to remind yourself of large purchases and help you stick to your budget.

3. Online/phone transactions

This alert will let you know when someone uses your credit card for a transaction online or over the phone.

Consider using this alert to manage your online spending as well as to quickly identify if someone has made unauthorized transactions.

4. Cash withdrawal

This alert will let you know when someone uses your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM.

Consider using this alert to monitor whether your credit card has been lost or stolen (resulting in a cash withdrawal). This alert can also serve as a reminder that interest starts accruing immediately when you withdraw cash from a credit card, so it’s best to pay the money back as soon as possible.

5. Transaction declined

This alert will let you know when a transaction on your credit card is declined.

Consider using this alert to monitor whether your credit card has been lost or stolen. This alert may also let you know when you’ve reached your credit limit.

Computer

Online banking

You can set up the following six security alerts on your Vancity accounts.

6. New bill payee added

This alert will let you know when someone has added a new bill payee to your account.

Consider using this alert to find out if someone you haven’t authorized is trying to set themselves up to receive payment out of your account.

7. Incorrect personal access code (PAC) – account locked

This alert will let you know when your online banking account has been locked after the maximum number of failed attempts to log in.

Consider using this alert if you suspect someone is trying to guess your personal access code. We can unlock your account for you, and help you choose a new, secure code. If this is as a result of a phishing scam or malware, we may recommend having your computer cleaned.

8. Personal access code (PAC) changed

This alert will let you know when someone has changed your personal access code through online banking.

Consider using this alert to monitor the security of your online banking account. If you receive an unexpected alert, we can help you reset the security features on your account. We may have to block your online banking access temporarily to investigate why your personal access code was changed.

9. Incorrect personal access answers – account locked

This alert will let you know when your online banking account has been locked after the maximum number of failed attempts to answer your personal access question.

Consider using this alert to monitor the security of your online banking account. When you’re accessing your account from a new computer or mobile device, our system will ask for the answer to your personal access question. If you receive this alert unexpectedly, contact us right away to secure your account. If you simply forgot the answer to your personal access question, we can help reset it.

10. Log in to online banking

This alert will let you know when someone has logged into your online banking account.

Consider using this alert to monitor the security of your online banking account. If you didn’t access your account or it appears that your account has been compromised, we will work with you to secure your account.

11. A new INTERAC® e-Transfer recipient has been added

This alert will let you know when someone has added a new e-Transfer recipient to your online banking account.

Consider using this alert to find out if someone you haven’t authorized is trying to set themselves up to receive an e-Transfer out of your account.
