Free events for National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019

                       

National Indigenous Peoples Day, coming up on Friday, June 21, is a day to recognize and celebrate the cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

There are many free community events taking place throughout June and everyone is welcome. These events are a great opportunity to learn more about local Indigenous communities, and the diverse cultures and history of the first peoples.

Check out the full listing of events, including events in Abbotsford, Alert Bay, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria.

Vancity is supporting National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations in a number of communities and we’ll have booths at the following three events in Vancouver, Surrey and Victoria:

Vancouver

National Indigenous Day
Friday, June 21, 2019
9 to 11 am at Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre (1607 East Hastings Street, Vancouver)
12 to 5 pm at Trout Lake (3350 Victoria Drive, Vancouver)

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre is hosting the following festivities on National Indigenous Peoples Day:

  1. Pancake Breakfast: The breakfast will be held from 9 to 11 am at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre.
  2. Friendship Walk: The parade will start at 11 am at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre and will make its way to Trout Lake along Commercial Drive.
  3. Community Festival: The festival will be held from 12 to 5 pm at Trout Lake where there will be community festivities, including entertainment, vendors and an art display.

Surrey

National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration and Wellness Event
Friday, June 21, 2019
3 to 8 pm at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Road, Surrey)

This event will showcase cultural sharings, teachings, storytelling and practices and give participants an opportunity to experience the rich cultural history of Canada’s Indigenous people and allow for inter-generational connections to take shape. The event will also include:

  • Traditional games, crafts, activities and sports
  • Traditional and non-traditional food sampling
  • Cultural sharings, conversation and  stage performances
  • A variety of exhibitors offering health and wellness opportunities to the community.

Victoria

National Indigenous Peoples Day
Friday, June 21, 2019
10:30 am to 7 pm at Royal Roads University (2005 Sooke Road, Victoria)

The community is invited to this celebration on the traditional lands of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lkwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families. The day-long event will include Indigenous practices and protocols, art, food and games, including:

  • canoe landing protocol and canoe challenge
  • drumming, singing and dancing
  • children’s field games
  • Indigenous foods
  • craft workshops
  • artists and vendors
  • a walk along Colwood Creek with Cowichan Nation Elder Kenneth Elliot to learn about the history of the land and Indigenous plants.
