Twenty minutes away from downtown Vancouver is an up-and-coming suburb with an expanding food scene. While you may have been to New Westminster before, it’s worth another visit. Here are five restaurants in New Westminster where you can have a delicious meal without breaking your budget:
1. The Spud Shack Fry Co.
Because it’s located in the New Westminster Skytrain station, The Spud Shack is easy to find if you are commuting. On Mondays, they have #MondayMadness specials where their regular poutines are half price. Couple that with Happy Hour from 2-6pm, when draft beer and house wine are $5 each, and you have an inexpensive meal out.

2. Taqueria Playa Tropical
New Westminster is host to diverse types of cuisine, including authentic and fresh Mexican food. Order a few tacos with a pineapple Jarritos (Mexican soft drink) for under $10 at Taqueria Playa Tropical. And if you’re a big eater, check out the Monster Burrito.
Address: 334 6th Street
Phone: 604-544-5006
3. Coming Home Cafe
This cozy cafe serves up comforting breakfast and lunch food. Everything is under $10. It has a homey vibe with it’s old diner-like decor where nothing really matches. Growing up, I remember a lot of our cups and plates didn’t match because we would break everything, so this place brought me back to being a kid again.
They have all day breakfast but if you want to get creative, you can build you own breakfast to suit your taste.
Address: 753 6th Street

4. Anny’s Dairy Bar
Trying a frosty treat at Anny’s Dairy Bar such as their Maple Twist Cone is sure to please. They also have classic banana splits and ice cream sundaes. If your sweet tooth isn’t up to the challenge, they also serve burgers, poutines and hot dogs.
Address: 722 6th Street
Phone: 604-515-1410
5. Longtail Kitchen
One place you can’t miss is Longtail Kitchen, located inside the River Market. This is especially true if you’re looking for Thai-style comfort food and flavours. This is the sister restaurant to Maenam and Fat Mao from celebrated chef Angus An.
Head over here for lunch to enjoy their famous chicken wings or their steamed sawmill bay mussels. A bit pricier than some of the above restaurants we mentioned, but the taste will blow you away.
